BRE Scotland Visitor Centre wins sustainable design award

Glasgow Institute of Architects recognises first commercial building to use Scottish grown cross-laminated timber walls.

Ravenscraig Visitor CentreThe new Visitor Centre on the BRE Innovation Park @Ravenscraig has won a Sustainability Award Commendation in a competition hosted by the Glasgow Institute of Architects. The closed panel timber frame building was recognised in the commercial premises category for demonstrating the latest thinking in offsite manufacture, technology integration and building management.

Designed by BRE Scotland, Kraft Architecture and CCG OSM (CCG Scotland’s offsite manufacturing team), the Visitor Centre is the first of ten buildings to be constructed on the two-acre park, located on the former steelworks site at Ravenscraig in Lanarkshire. It will be used primarily as a visitor hub incorporating flexible office space, meeting and exhibition areas.

As well as being extremely sustainable, the carbon neutral building has been designed to be cost efficient over its lifetime. Its features include a highly insulated building fabric, zoned lighting and heating systems, an air source heat pump, solar PV, solar water heating and an extensive building management system to monitor and manage energy performance. It also incorporates the first commercial use of Scottish grown cross-laminated timber walls.

“It’s a great honour that the design and performance of our new Visitor Centre has been recognised by the design community,” said David Kelly, Associate Director of Construction Innovation at BRE Scotland. “We wanted to create a building that is not only energy efficient but enhances the wellbeing of its occupants. Our sincere thanks goes to Kraft Architecture and CCG (Scotland) Ltd. for their commitment in taking our design brief and aspirations and turning these into reality.”

The Visitor Centre has been designed to achieve a BREEAM Outstanding rating.
